National Association of Real Estate Brokers and Homelight Present New Program to Increase Black Real Estate Agents

One way to decrease the homeownership gap is for more Black people to become real estate agents. Currently, the number of Black people in the industry is depressingly  low. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, less than 6 percent of real estate professionals in the United States are Black. Increasing this number could create more equal opportunities for people of color to achieve homeownership and, in turn, shrink the homeownership and wealth gaps.  Fortunately, HomeLight and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) have stepped up to take on the issue. They have recently announced a new partnership to increase the number of Black real estate agents. The program will be the first of its kind.

What is the Black Real Estate Agent Program?

HomeLight and NAREB's Black Real Estate Agent Program will help aspiring agents with financial endeavors, education, and other aspects of their careers. The assistance includes putting up to $5,000 towards pre-licensing classes, marketing and technology needs, as well as agent exams. The Black Real Estate Agent Program will also include one-on-one mentorship. Each aspiring real estate agent enrolled in the program will be paired with a Realtist from NAREB to receive advising, training, and education throughout their journey. This will provide tons of helpful benefits and resources-- more than most brokers would usually offer.

Who is a good fit to apply?

Applications for this program are already open.  HomeLight and NAREB are looking for Black applicants between the ages of 18 and 35 from anywhere in the U.S. They are targeting applicants who are seeking a career in real estate but are not currently established agents. Applicants should be willing to work with a broker for at least one year once they'€™ve started their career. Applicants also need to commit  5 to 10 hours a week working with mentors or taking classes. In short, if you'€™re a young Black aspiring real estate agent who'€™s committed to establishing your career, you'€™re a great fit for the program!
