ABAYOMI COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

HISTORY In 1980, Pastor Larry Smith opened the Charles H. Williams Human Development Center, a soup kitchen on Meyers Rd. in Detroit. This community resource fed over 200 people weekly for 11 years. The center also distributed clothing and provided AA and NA meetings to people recovering from substance abuse disorder. After moving his church to West Eight Mile Rd. in Detroit, Pastor Smith wanted to continue to feed and clothe the hungry and homeless. His daughter Tawnya Morris took the lead and held a series of focus group sessions to better understand the community’s needs. After school programs that dealt with violence and substance abuse prevention were a top priority. Homework help and other training and support programs to keep kids off the streets and in a safe environment were desired as well. Pastor Smith encouraged his daughter to start a new nonprofit that would best meet the needs of the community. Mrs. Morris sought the help of various church, business and community leaders to help in planning the mission and vision of a new organization. In 1998, Mrs. Morris created the Abayomi Community Development Corporation. “Abayomi”, a term from the Yoruba tribe in West Africa which means “a pleasant meeting place”, pronounced a-ba-yo-mee, is a 501(c)(3) human services nonprofit organization serving the metropolitan Detroit area. Abayomi provides community & economic development, education, and recreation programs to youth and families in the far Northwest and metropolitan Detroit. Our goals are to establish an awareness of the value of family, improve socioeconomic conditions and increase the level of dignity and personal achievement within the Detroit community. MISSION To strengthen and secure families and the local community through comprehensive community building. VISION Abayomi envisions being an established, fiscally sound, recognized organization, which impacts the community with quantifiable, positive results. VALUES The board and staff of Abayomi Community Development Corporation value F.A.M.I.L.I.E.S. Fairness – We believe in fairness and equality for all mankind. Assistance – We believe in providing services and sharing resources that help meet the needs of our clients. Morality – We value high moral character as it enables individuals to behave properly, act responsibly and make good decisions. Improvement – We will continuously work to improve the quality and effectiveness of our programs and services with a goal of achieving positive impact and outcomes for our clients. Love – Love represents human kindness, compassion and affection. Treating our clients with love demonstrates our care and concern for them and their families. Involvement – We are involved in our community and support efforts to keep it safe, clean and livable. Enrichment – We work with individuals and families to help enhance and improve their lives. Security – Our motto is Building Families For the Future. Stronger, more secure families lead to safer more secure neighborhoods. ACCREDITATION COA Accreditation is an objective and reliable verification that provides confidence and support to an organization’s service recipients, Board members, and staff and community partners. COA’s commitment to maintaining the highest level of standards and quality improvement is designed to identify providers that have set high performance standards for themselves and have made a commitment to their constituents to deliver the highest quality services. COA is proud to recognize Abayomi CDC as one of these outstanding organizations. The COA Accreditation process involves a detailed review and analysis of both an organization’s administrative operations and its service delivery practices. All are “measured” against national standards of best practice. These standards emphasize services that are accessible, appropriate, culturally responsive, evidence based, and outcomes-orientated. In addition, they confirm that the services are provided by a skilled and supportive workforce and that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect. Because COA reviews and accredits the entire organization, not just specific programs, you can have confidence in the credibility, integrity and achievement of the entire organization.

BRIDGING COMMUNITIES, INC.

Mission Our work improves the quality of life for the elders, families, and surrounding communities through collective growth, creative collaboration, advocacy, and innovative programming. Vision To create well-resourced neighborhoods that support communities for a lifetime. History We began our work in Southwest Detroit in 1980 as Ecumenical Project S.A.V.E. (Seek and Visit the Elderly.) We are a non-profit grassroots organization collaborating with local unions, businesses, faith-based organizations, and residents working together to create caring communities where people of all ages can live in dignity. Recognizing the direct relationship between the quality of life for elders and their community, the organization saw the need to become more actively involved in community organizing, land use, planning, and housing development. Compassion The Bridging Communities Eldercare Program offers professional assessments for the elderly to identify their needs, and partner with volunteers from across Michigan to meet and fulfill those needs. Our services range from case management to friendly visiting, supportive transportation, minor home repairs, and much more. Our compassion ensures a comprehensive assessment and resolve of identified needs. Connectivity Our intergenerational programs ignite a circle of learning that destroys age-based stereotypes by including “all ages for all stages” of our service provision. We create a connection between our youth and seniors to establish a line of communication that is mutually beneficial and strengthens our community, one connection at a time. Care Home is where the heart is, and is the center of strong neighborhoods. In order to stabilize our communities, our Development Program transforms foreclosed properties into resident owned and occupied homes; we rehabilitate low to moderate income housing, and create affordable senior housing communities. This creates a safe and walkable neighborhood, and neighbors who feel free to enjoy it and each other.

Our strategies for achieving these goals include building a foundation of financial and home buyer knowledge, providing down payment assistance programs and/or creating exceptional, affordable housing stock for our clients. Programs designed to keep people in their current homes include foreclosure intervention and homeowner renovation programs. CENTRAL DETROIT CHRISTIAN CDC

ABOUT Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a non-profit, faith based organization committed to empowering people, creating positive opportunities for the community and loving our neighbors as ourselves. VISION “Once again, men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets . . . the city streets will be filled with boys and girls there. This is what the Lord Almighty says!” -Zechariah 8:4-5 MISSION To transform individuals to reach their highest potential while transforming the community to be a place of peace and wholeness, “Shalom”. ABOUT THE FOUNDER Lisa is the Founder, and former Executive Director of Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation (CDC), a non-profit organization that she co-founded with Melvin Green in 1993. Central Detroit Christian CDC follows the tenets of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), relocate, reconcile, and redistribute. Lisa believes deep in her heart that the only way to serve a neighborhood is to live there and be a neighbor. Detroit has been a racially and economically divided city for decades. Healing this divide takes time, presence, mutual trust, love and prayer. Redistribution of resources to remediate the resource and economic gap is a natural extension of the blessings we have received. Central Detroit Christian CDC has aggregated resources from partner churches, our supporters, and foundations to help our neighbors get into affordable homes, learn new skills to get a job, get a house painted, and provide assistance during a crisis. Sometimes this means taking calls in the middle of the night to pray for and console a family that lost a loved one. Sometimes this means lending a helping hand during a time of need. Relocation, reconciliation and redistribution work together in Central Detroit to create peace (Shalom). Lisa, and her staff, strive towards the same goal, Shalom in the neighborhood and to hear Christ say, “Well done good and faithful servant!” Lisa is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College with a major in Education and Bible and a graduate of John Marshall Law School. Lisa’s husband Dan is active in several ministries, including The Urban Ministry Institute, TUMI, and Bring Our Men Back, BOMB Squad and Kingsmen, while holding down a job as an electrician. They have two children, Justin and Emma and many non-biological children. They live where they serve in central Detroit.
